mL to L

Welcome to mL to L, our website about the conversion of milliliters to liters.

If you have been asking yourself how many liters are in a milliliter, then you have arrived at the right website, too. 🙂

The liter is a metric unit of volume which is SI accepted; its unit symbol is l or L.

Likewise, the symbols for milliliter are ml and mL, always with a lowercase m.

Throughout our site we mainly use the American spelling liter, the international spelling is litre.

Convert mL to L

Time needed: 1 minute.

How to convert milliliters to liters in 2 easy steps:

  1. Divide the Volume by 1000

    [mL] / 1000 = x

  2. Add the Unit Symbol for Liter

    x → x L

As follows from our formula above, to convert the volume divide the volume in milliliters by 1000.

You achieve the same result by moving the decimal point tree positions to the left.

For example, if you have 250 ml, you divide 250 by 1000 to obtain 0.25 L.

Or move the decimal point like this: 250.0 → 25.0 → 2.5 → 0.25.

With either method you get 250 mL = 0.25 L.

As we have shown, the conversion involves only a simple division.

How many Liters in a Milliliter?

A milliliter is a submultiple of a liter, exactly one thousandths of a liter.

The mL into L formula is [L] = [mL] / 1000, so we can answer the question as follows:

1 mL in L = 0.001 L 1 mL = 1/1000 L 1 milliliter to liters = 10−3 L

Some countries are using the symbol ℓ for liter, so you may also encounter the milliliters to liter equivalence written as 1 mℓ = 0.001 ℓ; this ℓ is called script lowercase l.

For a list of the countries using the lowercase ℓ as symbol for liter, and for further information on the unit of volume and its multiples and submultiples check out the reference at the bottom.
